Biological processes take place on the basis of converting DNA to protein; however, RNA is a vital intermediate of this central dogma making it an important molecule to study. The process of making RNA from DNA is known as transcription and RNA molecules are called transcripts. Transcriptomic technologies are the techniques used to study an organisms trascriptome, the sum of all of its RNA transcripts [1].
Transcriptomic studies can provide extensive information on gene expression in different tissues, conditions or time points giving new insights as to how genes are regulated and what biological processes they are involved in. It can also help infer the function of previously unannotated genes along with gene functions in human disease. An analysis of gene expression in its entirety allows detection of broad coordinated trends [1]. |
